The Phoenix Gallery Today during a show by National California Artist Charles Waldman

The Phoenix Gallery Topeka started out as a co-op gallery owned and run by artists in Lawrence Kansas. Primarily the gallery carried craft items and jewelry. In 1990 the original owners opened the Topeka location and sold it soon after to current gallery owner Kyle Garcia.

Originally the gallery layout consisted of the downstairs salon and the upstairs.  In 1993 we rented the space next to us that was a suba shop and cut a hole between the two spaces.  It is now what we call the gift gallery.  It is still nick-named the "scuba shop" to insiders.

Garcia changed the mix and format of the gallery instantly.  She added original paintings by notable artists from California and Kansas, a frame shop and corporate art consulting.  Later the gallery expanded to national artists and fine handcraft artists from all over the country. The gallery became one of the most popular galleries in the state. The first painting she ever sold was by artist Judith Mackey, she was also just starting out.  Mackey has since gone on to national fame.

The gallery During a Joyce Furney Show of her beautiful Raku installation pieces.

The gallery began to get bigger and bolder with our shows.  One of Garcia's all time favorite exhibits was large Raku pieces by Kansas artist Joyce Furney.  Furney is a wonderful artist as well as designer.  This show featured 8-10 foot tile Kimomos and abstract wall hangings all composed of Raku tile in a grid format. Joyce constructed stools and tables to compliment the wall pieces. It was a stunning display.
